For comparison, Premium is $348 over twelve months and Pro is $588; Starter is $0. In year one both worked stacks cost more than Premium. In later years the pay-once stack costs $228, which is less than Premium, and a paid Scrivener upgrade would add to it only if you choose one. What changes the sum is not the price of one tool but how many tools you keep.

When a specialist tool is the better choice
One home for your book is not the right answer for every writer. These are the cases where a dedicated tool serves you better, and we would rather you knew.
You want fine control over a print interior
We export EPUB, PDF and DOCX. If you want to design a print interior in detail, with your own trim sizes, chapter heading styles and ornaments, a dedicated book formatting app does more of that than we do.
You want your manuscript as files on your own computer
A desktop licence keeps the project as files on your disk. We are a web and mobile app, and your book lives in your account. Available on the web, iPhone, iPad, and Android — the same book on all of them, with offline drafting on mobile.
You check writing that is not a book
The Proofing Pass works inside your books, and it has daily limits by plan. If you want a checker that follows you into email, documents and web forms, a general grammar tool is built for that.
Your website is a shop or a business, not an author site
Your Site is made for authors and their books. If you need a store with a product catalogue, bookings or a site for a business, a general website builder fits better.
You would rather pay once than every year
Our paid plans are subscriptions, and a subscription costs money every year. If most of your tools are already one-time licences you own, the yearly cost of keeping them can be lower than ours. The table above shows where.
Bringing your book with you
You do not have to start again. These are the ways in today, and the limits of each.
Upload a manuscript file
DOC, DOCX, EPUB, RTF, ODT, MOBI, AZW3 or PDF, up to 50 MB. Plain TXT files are not accepted, so save a text file as DOCX first.
Scrivener
In Scrivener, choose File, then Back Up, then Back Up To, and choose the ZIP option. Upload that ZIP. One project at a time.
Sudowrite
Export your project as a ZIP of documents or as one DOCX and upload it. You can add the Outline, Characters and Worldbuilding CSV exports too: outlines become chapter notes, characters become character cards, and settings become Places. Braindump, genre, style and synopsis are copied in by hand. You review every document, and nothing is saved until you confirm.
Google Docs and Notion
Connect your account to import a document, push changes back, and keep the two in sync.

Questions writers ask
How much does a typical writing-tool stack cost?
It depends on which tools you choose and whether you pay once or every year. Using prices each vendor listed on 28 September 2026, a stack of Scrivener, Plottr, ProWritingAid, Atticus and a Squarespace Basic site came to $983.99 in the first year when paying once where possible, then $228 a year for the website. The same stack on yearly plans came to $614.99 in the first year and $408 a year after that.
Is Write in a Click cheaper than a stack of separate tools?
Against the two worked stacks on this page, yes in the first year: Premium is $29 a month, or $348 over twelve months, against $614.99 and $983.99, and Starter is free. In later years it depends. If you already own one-time licences, keeping them can cost less per year than a subscription, ours included. Starter covers drafting, planning, Story Hub, export and Your Site for $0.
Can I bring my Scrivener project?
Yes. In Scrivener, back the project up as a ZIP file (File, Back Up, Back Up To, then choose the ZIP option) and upload the ZIP. You can also upload DOCX, RTF, ODT, EPUB and other manuscript files.
What does the free Starter plan include?
Two books, one voice profile, seven days of version history, one Proofing Pass check a day, EPUB, PDF and DOCX export, the November Room and Your Site. No credit card.
Does Robin change my manuscript?
Robin, your story partner, is AI that reads your whole book and talks it through with you. In Edit Mode, Robin can suggest changes to your text, and you decide what lands. Proofing runs when you ask it to, and changes only what you accept.
Is my manuscript used to train models?
Your manuscript is never used to train models unless you opt in.
Why are some well-known tools missing from the table?
We only list a price we could read on the vendor's own page on the day we checked. Where a price was unclear or not shown, we left the tool out rather than guess.
