    Hear the Sentence Your Eyes Keep Skipping

    Listen reads your writing aloud inside Write in a Click. In the editor, press Listen (or Shift+P) and choose "Read selection" or "Read full chapter". In the Reader you can also play the full book and resume where you stopped. Each word is highlighted as it is read. There are ten natural voices in US and UK English and six speeds from 0.75x to 2x. Listen is included on Premium (300 minutes a month) and Pro (1,200 minutes).

    Why This Matters

    By the tenth read your brain reads the sentence you meant, not the one on the page. A voice does not. Hearing a chapter aloud is the oldest self-editing trick there is, because it catches the doubled word, the sentence with no breath in it, and dialogue nobody would say.

    The Listen button sits in the editor ribbon, titled "Read aloud (Shift+P)".

    "Read selection" for a paragraph you are unsure of, or "Read full chapter" to hear the whole thing.

    Pick a voice and speed

    Hover a voice in the Voice menu to hear a preview. Speed runs from 0.75x to 2x.

    Each word is highlighted as it is read. K or Space pauses, J goes back ten seconds, L goes forward ten.

    Listening in the editor

    The Listen menu has everything in one place: "Read selection", "Read full chapter", a Voice submenu with a preview on hover, and Speed at 0.75x, 1x, 1.25x, 1.5x, 1.75x and 2x. While audio plays, a small player docks in the editor and the word being read is highlighted in the text, so your eye stays with your ear.

    The keyboard controls are borrowed from video players, because they work: K or Space to pause and resume, J to jump back ten seconds, L to jump forward ten. When a sentence snags, press J, hear it again, and fix it while it is still in your ear.

    Listening in the Reader

    The Reader shows your book the way a reader will see it, and its Read Aloud menu goes further: "Read Selection", "Current Chapter", "Full Book", and "Resume from where you stopped". That last one makes it possible to listen to a whole draft over a week of walks, a chapter at a time.

    The voices

    There are ten voices, six in US English and four in UK English, split between female and male. They are high-quality neural voices, so a long chapter is listenable rather than robotic. Try two or three: a voice that is a little unlike your own inner narrator often catches more.

    What to listen for

    Run-on sentences that leave the voice gasping. Two sentences in a row that start the same way. A word you used twice in one line. Dialogue that reads well and sounds stiff. A paragraph that goes on after its point has landed. Listening will not tell you why a chapter drags, but it will show you where you stop paying attention, and that is usually the place.

    What It Does Not Do

    • Listen is not on the free plan.
    • Voices are English only, in US and UK accents. A book in another language will be read in an English voice.
    • When you reach your monthly minutes, listening stops until the 1st of the next month. There is no warning before the cap.
    • The editor ribbon, and the Listen button with it, is hidden on phones.
    • It is for review, not for making an audiobook. Audiobook production is marked "Coming soon".
