    Acts and Chapters You Can Move With Your Hands

    In Write in a Click a book is a list of chapters in the left sidebar, grouped into acts when you have more than one. You drag chapters into order, including between acts, pin a prologue and epilogue, park unfinished chapters in Drafts, and mark each chapter Not yet, Needs work or Revised. If you want a head start, Guide me asks for your genre, length and a one-line story and drafts a chapter skeleton with a coaching note under each chapter.

    Why This Matters

    A long book is not one document. It is forty decisions about order, most of which you will change. The structure tool keeps the shape of the book visible beside the page, and makes moving a chapter a drag rather than a copy-and-paste you are afraid of.

    How It Works

    Start with chapters

    Press "New Chapter", or use File > New > Chapter. Add an act from File > New > Act when the book needs one.

    Drag to reorder

    Every chapter has a grip handle. Drag it up, down or into another act, and "Saving order..." confirms the move.

    Mark where each chapter stands

    Set Revision to Not yet, Needs work or Revised. A coloured dot shows it in the sidebar, which sums it up as "X of Y revised".

    Or start from a skeleton

    When you create a book, Guide me drafts a set of chapters for your genre and length, each with a short coaching note, so you are never staring at chapter one alone.

    The sidebar is the outline

    The book's left sidebar has three parts: the Story Hub, the Table of Contents and Trash. The Table of Contents is the structure. Each chapter row shows its title and word count, and the chapter menu offers Rename, Move to Drafts and Delete Chapter.

    Acts appear as headers once there is more than one. Click an act title to rename it, add a subtitle with "+ Add subtitle", and see how many chapters it holds. The act menu can create a chapter inside it, remove the act (its chapters move to the neighbouring act) or send it to Trash.

    Prologue and Epilogue have their own buttons and stay pinned to the start and end of the book, so a drag never moves them by accident. Drafts is a holding pile for chapters that are written but not placed yet. "Add to book" moves one into the order when it is ready.

    Sorting a book you imported

    Imported manuscripts sometimes arrive out of order. "Show reorder preview" opens a Chapter order preview that can sort by numbers in titles, alphabetically, or back to the saved order. You see the result first, then press Approve or Reject. Titles are not renamed or edited. Only the order changes.

    Guide me: a skeleton, not a script

    Guide me is for the writer who knows the story but not the shape. It is offered when you create a new book, and it asks four things: the book's language, its genre, how long it should be, and one line describing the story. Then it creates a skeleton: about 8 chapters for a short book, 14 for a medium one and 22 for a long one, shaped by the usual patterns of your genre, whether that is romance, thriller and mystery, speculative, literary and contemporary, children's, memoir and biography, or practical non-fiction.

    Each chapter gets a short coaching note that sits under it in the Table of Contents, saying what this part of the book usually has to do. The chapters themselves are empty. Guide me gives advice, not prose, and you can rename, move, delete or ignore every chapter it makes.

    Tracking revision

    Every chapter header has a Revision field with three states: Not yet, Needs work and Revised. The Table of Contents shows each as a small dot, and the sidebar keeps a running summary such as "12 of 30 revised · 4 needs work". It is the simplest possible revision tracker, which is the point: you always know which chapter to open next.

    What It Does Not Do

    • There are no scenes. A chapter is one continuous document; use headings or scene breaks inside it.
    • There is no corkboard or index-card view. The sidebar list is the outline.
    • There are no named beat-sheet templates such as Save the Cat or the Hero's Journey. Guide me uses genre patterns and does not label them.
    • Chapters have no separate synopsis field. Chapter Notes in the Story Hub can be linked to a chapter instead.
    • Chapters and acts are not colour-coded.
