Room for the Sentence, and the Whole Novel

Literary fiction is revised sentence by sentence and read as a whole. Write in a Click gives you both: a Zen mode that clears the screen, read-aloud to hear the rhythm, every draft kept so a braver revision costs nothing, and Robin, your story partner, who has read the whole manuscript when you want to ask what an image is doing across the book.

What literary fiction asks of a writer

Literary fiction is loosely defined, and writers in it tend to resist the definition, but its readers share some expectations. The prose is part of the meaning, so style is revised as carefully as plot. Character interiority often matters more than event. Structure is allowed to be unusual: a novel told backwards, in fragments, across decades, or in second person, provided the form earns its place. Endings are frequently open.

That shapes how the book gets written. Literary novels are often drafted slowly and revised many times, sometimes over years, and a revision can change the whole book: a new point of view, a different tense, a timeline cut in half. Writers need to try those changes without losing what they had. They also read their work aloud, because rhythm is part of the sentence, and they depend on a small number of trusted readers, often from a workshop or an MFA cohort, before an agent sees anything.

The route to publication usually runs through a literary agent, with a query letter and the first pages of a finished, polished manuscript, and sometimes through literary magazines for shorter work first.

A worked example: revising a novel in two tenses

    1. Import the draft from Word or Google Docs. Each Heading 1 becomes a chapter.
    2. In Book Settings, set the book type to Fiction, the main genre to Contemporary and Literary Fiction as a sub-genre, so Reader Pulse reads the chapters as literary fiction rather than as a thriller.
    3. Add three or more samples of your own writing, at least 5,000 words in total, to Voices to build a voice profile. Robin uses it so its feedback fits the way you write, instead of pulling you toward an average style.
    4. Before the tense experiment, click Save Version Manually on the chapters you will change.
    5. Rewrite a chapter in the present tense in Zen mode. Press Listen to hear both versions read aloud.
    6. Open Compare Versions to see the two tenses side by side, and restore whichever the book needs.
    7. Ask Robin, in chat, where the image of the flooded field recurs, or how a character is described the first time they appear. Robin answers from every chapter.
    8. Run the Proofing Pass and open the Voice filter, which shows suggestions made with your voice profile in view. Dismiss what is deliberate.
    9. Invite two workshop readers with a Can comment link and an expiry. Their notes arrive in your Beta feedback inbox, where you reply to each thread or resolve it.
    10. Export a Word document for agent submissions.

What it will not do for literary writers

    • It does not score your style or rate your vocabulary.
    • Voice profiles describe your style so feedback fits it. They do not write in your voice.
    • Reader Pulse (Premium) estimates hooks, pacing and tension. That vocabulary fits commercial fiction better than a quiet novel; treat it as one reading among many.
    • In Edit Mode, Robin can suggest changes to a passage, and nothing lands unless you keep it. The default mode gives advice only, and the line work stays yours to accept or refuse.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is Write in a Click suitable for literary fiction?

Yes, for drafting and deep revision. The editor stays quiet, every draft is kept, and Robin answers questions about the whole manuscript in chat. The sentences stay yours.

Will the Proofing Pass flatten my style?

It changes only what you accept. Leave Picky Mode off, use the Voice filter against your own profile, and dismiss anything you meant. Fragments and unusual punctuation can stay.

Does it analyse my prose style?

There is no style score or style checker. Your voice profile, built from your samples, describes how you write so Robin's feedback fits it.

Can I submit to agents from here?

Export a Word document of the manuscript, then format it to each agent's guidelines. Most agents ask for the first pages or chapters pasted into a query.
