Proofing a chapter

The Proofreading panel sits in the editor's side rail. Its header shows how many issues it found and a count for each severity. "Run check" starts a pass on the chapter you are in. When it finishes, each finding appears as a card: the passage, what is wrong, and the suggested fixes as buttons that show the replacement text. Where there is no automatic fix, the card says "No automatic fix — review manually", because some problems need you, not a replacement.

If the chapter is clean, the panel says so: "Looks clean." The panel does not quietly rewrite anything on the way. Every change to your text is one you clicked.

Proofing the whole book

Each book has an Edit page for the finishing work. The "Proof run" card lets you pick chapters, or "Proof whole book", and shows each chapter's state: Not started, Proofing…, Done, Error or Up to date. You can leave while it runs; a notification tells you when it is finished.

Its suggestions come back with Apply and Dismiss and a running count of what is open and what you applied. A clean result says so plainly. If some chapters could not be checked, the page says it cannot tell you those chapters are clean, rather than implying they are.

Voice and canon

Two of the six impact labels are what make this a novelist's proofreader. Voice means the pass reads your own style, tone, point of view and pacing first and treats that as the baseline. It flags places where you drift from yourself, not places where you differ from a textbook, and it leaves dialogue alone: character voice is protected.

Canon means the pass reads your prose against your Story Hub. Names there count as correct spellings, and it marks as Critical the things a copy editor is paid to catch: a name that drifts ("Elara" becoming "Ellara"), a pronoun or role that contradicts the profile, a trait that changes, a place described two ways, a broken rule of your world, an event out of order on your timeline.

Settings

"Proofing settings" opens Proofreading Settings, which apply to all your books. Two switches control the layers: Editing (style, typography, semantics) and Proofreading (grammar, spelling, punctuation). Picky Mode asks for more detailed suggestions. A Personal Dictionary holds the words that should never be flagged, which for most novelists means every invented name. The Style & Tone tab turns tone, clarity, engagement and delivery suggestions on or off, and each category has its own rule switches. The proofing language follows the book's language setting.
