Children's books that sound right read aloud

"Children's book" covers several markets with different readers. Picture books are read aloud by an adult to a young child. Early readers and chapter books are for children starting to read alone. Middle grade is for roughly eight to twelve. Each has its own expectations for length, vocabulary and sentence structure, and agents and editors notice a manuscript that is the wrong length for its category.

The literary agent Mary Kole's widely cited guidelines on Kidlit.com give upper limits of about 600 words for a fiction picture book, 1,500 for an early reader, 4,000 to 15,000 for a chapter book, and up to 45,000 for contemporary middle grade (65,000 for upper middle grade fantasy or science fiction). These are guidelines. Publishers' submission pages are the final word.

Picture books have a physical form: traditionally 32 pages, of which only some carry the story, laid out in spreads. The page turn is a storytelling tool: the question on one spread and the answer on the next. The text also has to leave room for the illustrator. If a picture will show the red boots, the words don't need to say so.

1. Create the book and make each chapter a spread: "Spread 1", "Spread 2", and so on. The sidebar shows the word count for each, so you can see where the text runs long against a limit like 600 words.
2. Keep illustration notes for the editor in Chapter Notes in Story Hub, rather than in the text, so the manuscript stays as the words alone.

6. Export DOCX or PDF for agent or publisher submissions.

• There is no picture-book layout, trim size or illustration placement. It holds the words, not the finished book, so layout happens with an illustrator or designer.
• You cannot insert images into the editor.
• The read-aloud voices are synthetic. They help you hear rhythm and stumbles; they can't tell you whether a four-year-old will laugh.
• Readability checks are a guide to hard passages, not a verdict on a category. The word limits for your category, and your editor's judgement, still decide.
