Academic Books: An Honest Fit Guide

An academic monograph or textbook is judged on its argument and its apparatus. The argument usually runs from an introduction that places the book in a field, through chapters that each advance one part of the claim, to a conclusion that says what has changed. The apparatus is the notes, the bibliography, and often tables, figures and an index, all set in the house style of the press or in a named guide such as the Chicago Manual of Style, APA or MLA.

That apparatus is where most of the labour is. Academic authors typically keep sources in a reference manager and let it format citations in the chosen style, because doing it by hand across hundreds of references is slow and error-prone. Presses then ask for a manuscript file with notes intact, so that copyeditors can check them.

It fits the stage before the apparatus: turning a dissertation or a set of articles into a book with one argument. Import the chapters from Word or Google Docs (each Heading 1 becomes a chapter), rename and reorder them, and save a version before each restructure so you can compare the old and new shapes. It does not fit the finishing stage. There are no footnotes or endnotes, no citation styles, no connection to reference managers, and no tables or figures inside the manuscript. If your citations live in the text, they will be plain text here and must be rebuilt in your word processor. For that reason this page is not a recommendation to write your whole academic book here, and it is kept out of search results until the product supports notes.
